Cricket World Cup

The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup will be hosted by the West Indies from March 13 to April 28, 2007. There will be a total of fifty one matches played at the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, which is three fewer than at the 2003 World Cup, despite the two extra teams taking part.

It will be contested by 16 nations divided into 4 groups of 4 teams. The top two teams from each group will then compete in a "Super 8" format, similar to the previous "Super 6" format, from which the semi-finalists will be decided.

The Official Song for this World Cup is "The Game of Love and Unity" by Jamaican-born Shaggy, Barbadian entertainer Rupee and Trinidadian Faye-Ann Lyons.

The ten Test match playing countries and Kenya qualified for this World Cup automatically, and 5 further teams qualified via the 2005 ICC Trophy, thus gaining ODI status. The field of sixteen teams is the largest ever for the Cricket World Cup.

The Greenfield Stadium, Trelawny, Jamaica will host the Opening Ceremony on 11 March 2007.

Quattrocchi

New Delhi - Feb 26, 2007 - Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi’s son, Mr Massimo Quattrocchi, has opened an office of his Italy-based investment company, CI Partners, in Bangalore. CI Partners describes itself as the "advisory company of Clubinvest Sarl, an investment company based in Luxembourg that started activities in March 2005 (after the UPA government came to power)." CI Partners itself is headquartered in Milan.

Mr Massimo Quattrocchi is a regular visitor to India and was recently sighted at a five-star hotel in New Delhi around the time Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi was visiting. CI Partners claims to have "in-depth experience of international markets, particularly India and as such, is in a position to play a key role in helping investee companies set up a commercial/ productive presence or linkup/exit with some of the leading groups in the country (sic)". It gives its main address as 19 Via Carducci, Milan (Italy), and, under what it calls "geographical preferences", lists India, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. CI Partners is Mr Massimo Quattrocchi’s company and has an office running from Bangalore.

Mr Massimo Quattrocchi, 33, reportedly also has "good" connections in India and is a regular visitor. He himself had worked as a freelance consultant for investors in the energy, real estate and tourism sectors earlier. He was with Antfactory in Italy, which was liquidated in 2001. Before that he was an economist with the World Bank in Washington and has done his M.Sc. in development and international relations from the London School of Economics. His father, Mr Ottavio Quattrocchi, while in Delhi, had struck up a close friendship with the late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and his wife Sonia Gandhi. Their children too were reportedly good friends.

For two long weeks, India's most famous Italian, Ottavio Quattrocchi, charged with bribing senior Indian officials and politicians in the sale of a Swedish gun called Bofors 20 years ago, has been cooling his heels in preventive custody in a small town in the north of Argentina.

For just as long, the Indian government has known that this is where Quattrocchi currently is. According to Indian law, both bribe-giving and bribe-taking are offences. And under normal circumstances this would have been an open-and-shut case, with New Delhi asking Buenos Aires to extradite the Italian businessman.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears before she shaved her head, due largely to the "lice" which she could not tolerate under any circumstances. No way.

We at Librahitech fails to understand why she should shave her head to eliminate the "lice" on it when in fact she could have gone to Chinar or Indiar, as some of our British friends say, to get rid of the "lice" from her otherwise beautiful hair. And now, her head looks lousy! This is our opinion, and no disrespt is meant to anyone, therefore, please excuse us, thank you.

We have no idea whether or not Britney Spears is to sign up at Agloco

Prince Harry

London – Saturday, February 17, 2007 - PRINCE Harry is going to Iraq, reportedly heading there with his unit in May.

Harry will be stationed near the southern port city of Basra and will likely be assigned to patrol the border with Iran.

London's Daily Telegraph said Harry, 22, is determined to go, despite reports of resistance from many in the military who fear he would be a fat prize for terrorists. They're also worried he would attract attention and put his fellow soldiers in greater danger.

The Telegraph said officials are trying to figure out how to minimise the danger without giving Harry special treatment. As a second lieutenant, he will have command of 11 men and four light tanks.

Meanwhile, the Prince has joined girlfriend Chelsy Davy, 21, and her family on Bazaruto Island, off Mozambique, for the third year running for a holiday courtesy of safari operator Charles Davy.

Harry has become increasingly close to the Zimbabwean-born tycoon, who has been widely criticised for his links to Robert Mugabe.

Mr Davy is one of the country's biggest landowners and is thought to control about 1 per cent of all agricultural land at a time when many white farmers are being brutally forced out of their livelihood.

Harry has refused to hear a word against him and has once more chosen to abandon the Royal Family's traditional New Year at Sandringham in favour of spending his holiday with the Davy clan.

There are fears Harry will be targeted in Iraq. Inset, girlfriend Chelsy Davy.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Prince's regiment, the Blues and Royals, will go to Basra at the end of the month.

It quotes a 'senior military source' as saying: "The final details are being sorted out, but he is definitely going. "Naturally, his royal status has to be taken into account - but he will see action."

Prince on parade...

The Mirror says the 23-year-old Second Lieutenant is likely to be in charge of a troop of 12 soldiers in light armoured vehicles. They would be sent on reconnaisance missions out in the desert. The missions could last days or even weeks.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said no decision on troop deployment has been made yet, but that one may be taken within the next few weeks.

According to the Mirror, Defence Secretary Des Browne will make an announcement on February 26.

We at Librahitech do not subscribe to the idea of Prince Harry going to Iraq.

Amitabh for President

NEW DELHI – 16 February 2007 - Amitabh Bachchan as the 12th President of India?

Suddenly, out of nowhere, the Bollywood megastar's name is doing the rounds among the probable candidates for India’s highest constitutional position.

The current President, veteran scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, vacates the office in July.

If murmurs in the political circles are to be believed, Bachchan —popularly known as ‘Big B’— is likely to contest the presidential election.

In the midst of hectic parleys that have begun to select President Kalam’s successor, political parties, especially leaders from Samajwadi Party, feel the time has come to propose Big B’s name for the President’s job.

Even former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP is believed to be backing the move. TDP leaders feel Big B can be a ‘fantastic president’. Being a non-political person, he can very well motivate the youth as the President of India, believes TDP.

In fact, smaller political parties like the AIADMK and Asom Gana Parishad too are hoping that Bachchan contests the poll.

The hint, however, came from Samajwadi Party's Rajya Sabha member Shahid Siddiqui, a Muslim intellectual: “We will support Mr Bachchan’s name for Presidentship,” he stated.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, India's main Opposition party, reacted cautiously, saying they will support the candidate who they think is right.

The prominent names doing the rounds for presidentship are of Congress leaders Dr Karan Singh and Sushil Kumar Shinde, Vice President of India Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee among others.

We at Librahitech would love to see that Amitabh Bachchan is the next President of India.

Hellow World!

When you walk into a sporting goods store, does the salesperson immediately assume that you play hockey? Of course not. In fact, he'd probably never make a sale if he greeted every customer with "Hi! We've got some great ice skates in just your size. Would you like to see a pair?"

On the other hand, the one-size-fits-all sales pitch -- "Hello, may I help you?" -- doesn't exactly entice shoppers to break out the old wallet either.

Instead, the really good salespeople are trained to discover details about the customer before trying to pitch a particular item. A question like, "Hi, how are you? What sport do you play?" is a great opening line. It gets the customer to focus on a general topic, and then persuades him or her to narrow down the choices. And a focused customer is a buyer, not a browser.

So, let's see if you are a buyer or a browser. Click on the logo below to check it out for yourself.

Lipitor

Lipitor is a cholesterol-lowering drug. Your doctor may prescribe it along with a special diet if your blood cholesterol or triglyceride level is high and you have been unable to lower your readings by diet alone. The drug works by helping to clear harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol out of the blood and by limiting the body's ability to form new LDL cholesterol.

Your doctor may prescribe Lipitor to reduce your chances of having a heart attack or developing heart disease if you have any of the following risk factors:

Are age 55 years or older
Smoke
Have high blood pressure
Have low levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein--the good cholesterol)
Have a family history of early heart disease

For people at high risk of heart disease, the doctor may suggest a cholesterol-lowering medication if LDL readings are 130 or more. For those at low risk, a medication is considered at readings of 190 or more.

Most important fact about Lipitor:

Lipitor is usually prescribed only if diet, exercise, and weight loss fail to bring your cholesterol levels under control. It's important to remember that Lipitor is a supplement--not a substitute--for those other measures. To get the full benefit of the medication, you need to stick to the diet and exercise program prescribed by your doctor. All these efforts to keep your cholesterol levels normal are important because they may lower your risk of heart disease.

India 2007

WASHINGTON — 03 February 2007 - Indian firms topped the 2007 Global Services 100 list of the best IT and BPO companies in the world with 36 making the grade.

The US came second with 32 companies, says Global Services magazine, which compiles the list on the basis of an 18-country survey. However, over a dozen US companies service their clients largely through BPO offices based in India.

The survey also points at the strongest bilateral IT/BPO relationship between the US and India. The US is expected to purchase some $1.55 trillion in IT/BPO goods and services in 2007, of which two-thirds will probably come from India. In the specific areas of outsourcing, PricewaterhouseCooper has estimated the global market to be $234 billion and the US represents 59 per cent of that market.

Lakshmi Mittal

SADULPUR: A tiny Rajasthani desert hamlet in Churu district is all set to turn the corner. It will have a modern hospital, gushing drinking water and a Rs 5 crore community centre. All this not because of state magnanimity but because of a quirk of fate.

It was here 54 years ago that Lakshmi Mittal, Britain's richest man and the No.3 on the Forbes list, was born without the luxury of even a labour room, at a small haveli midwived by a local dai .

On Monday evening, Mittal and his family landed in Sadulpur to the welcome tune of a folk song traditionally reserved for war heroes and a shower of petals. Villagers lined the main street to receive the motorcade which brought in Mittal, wife Usha, daughter Vanisha and his father Mohan Lal.

It was the first visit by the family in four decades, although Mittal had come here once in 2005, before he was crowned Steel King with a net worth of $ 25 billion.

It was his third ever visit to his home after he jumped 59 places on the billionaire ladder in 2006 to emerge No. 3 on the Forbes list. The last time Mittal and his wife came to Rajasthan was in 2005 to inaugurate the Lakshmi N Mittal Institute of Information Technology's new campus in Jaipur. This time, Mittal launched a Rs 5 crore community centre in Sadulpur named after his mother Gita Devi.

Tata Steel

London / Mumbai - 2 February 2007 - Tata Steel wins Corus for $12 billion.

India's Tata Steel is set to become the world's fifth-biggest steel maker after winning a dramatic bid battle for Anglo-Dutch group Corus with a 6.2 billion pound ($12.2 billion) offer.

The deal, India's biggest-ever foreign takeover, is expected to fuel a new wave of consolidation in the fragmented steel sector after Mittal Steel bought Arcelor for $32 billion last year to create the world's biggest steel producer.

"This creates an incentive for more consolidation in Asia (Japan, China) and in the United States," said Sylvain Brunet, head of steel and mining at Exane BNP Paribas, adding that CSN was a likely predator after missing out on Corus.

Corus shares jumped 7 percent to near the bid price, and were up 6.7 percent at 601 pence at 1500 GMT. Other European steel stocks also rose, with Arcelor Mittal hitting a new high of 36.32 euros.

Corus takeover turns India euphoric.

India - This former British colony is discovering that it is far better to take over than be taken over.

India erupted with serves-them-right jubilation this week when Tata Group, an Indian conglomerate, won a bid for the Corus Group — the Anglo-Dutch descendant of British Steel — for more than $12 billion, the largest acquisition ever by an Indian firm. Headlines spoke of empires striking back, while pundits and industrialists said India had at last arrived as a world power.

As the value of overseas bids by Indian firms soared to $21 billion last year from less than $1 billion in 2000, according to the market researcher Dealogic, an elite slice of this country has grown intoxicated by the fantasy that it will one day own the world.

The takeover of Western companies by Indians has struck many here as evidence of a delicious reversal of fortune: a once-proud civilization, having fallen to the humiliations of colonization, is now buying out the hallowed corporations of the West.

"A pulsating, dynamic new India is emerging," Amitabh Bachchan, a Bollywood actor, says in a television ad for The Times of India. "An India whose faith in success is far greater than its fear of failure. An India that no longer boycotts foreign-made goods but buys out the companies that make them instead."

Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. In India, he is recognized as the Father of the Nation. October 2nd, his birthday, is each year commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, and is a national holiday. He was the pioneer of Satyagraha, the resistance of tyranny through mass civil disobedience, firmly founded upon ahimsa or total non-violence, which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi is commonly known in India and across the world as Mahatma Gandhi (Hindi: mhatma; from Sanskrit, mahatma: Great Soul) and as Bapu (in Gujarati, Father).

A British-educated lawyer, Gandhi first employed his ideas of peaceful civil disobedience in the Indian community's struggle for civil rights in South Africa. Upon his return to India, he organized poor farmers and labourers to protest against oppressive taxation and widespread discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for the alleviation of poverty, for the liberation of women, for brotherhood amongst differing religions and ethnicities, for an end to untouchability and caste discrimination, and for the economic self-sufficiency of the nation, but above all for Swaraj—the independence of India from foreign domination. Gandhi famously led Indians in the disobedience of the salt tax on the 400 kilometre (248 miles) Dandi Salt March in 1930, and in an open call for the British to Quit India in 1942. He was imprisoned for many years on numerous occasions in both South Africa and India.

Throughout his life, Gandhi remained committed to non-violence and truth even in the most extreme situations. A student of Hindu philosophy, he lived simply, organizing an ashram that was self-sufficient in its needs. Making his own clothes—the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl woven with a charkha, he lived on a simple vegetarian diet. He used rigorous fasts, for long periods, for both self-purification and protest. Gandhi's life and teachings inspired Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Biko and Aung San Suu Kyi and through them the American civil rights movement and the freedom struggles in South Africa and Myanmar respectively.

Emirates News

Hot off the shelf - Yesterday Emirates News was first broadcast on Dubai One television channel at 7.30pm. This is the first daily half-hour English programme broadcasting news and events shaping Dubai and the UAE. The spokesperson behind this effort is UAE national Najla Al-Awadhi who dons two official hats — one of Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Media Incorporated and the other of General Manager of Dubai One TV.

Confident and articulate, she is a role model not only to Arab women, but also to the women of the world. She speaks to Weekend about the new programme and future plans.

How did the idea of a news channel come about?

The expatriate community living in Dubai do not have a forum outside the print and radio platforms to find out local information, whether it is the change in laws, labour or traffic rules and other local developments. We are the official voice of the Government of Dubai, which gives us a lot of credibility. We have access to breaking news and information that other reporters or news agencies do not have. So this is a powerful source that provides information that is extremely valuable to them.
