Emirates News

Hot off the shelf - Yesterday Emirates News was first broadcast on Dubai One television channel at 7.30pm. This is the first daily half-hour English programme broadcasting news and events shaping Dubai and the UAE. The spokesperson behind this effort is UAE national Najla Al-Awadhi who dons two official hats — one of Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Media Incorporated and the other of General Manager of Dubai One TV.

Confident and articulate, she is a role model not only to Arab women, but also to the women of the world. She speaks to Weekend about the new programme and future plans.

How did the idea of a news channel come about?

The expatriate community living in Dubai do not have a forum outside the print and radio platforms to find out local information, whether it is the change in laws, labour or traffic rules and other local developments. We are the official voice of the Government of Dubai, which gives us a lot of credibility. We have access to breaking news and information that other reporters or news agencies do not have. So this is a powerful source that provides information that is extremely valuable to them.
