The Corporate Truth

Lack of desire to aim for the better and to grow is generally seen as abnormality and will affect the future of the person drastically. And this applies more to the workplace. An employee who remains in a role for a long time, for whatever reason is looked down upon. Thus, even if he deliberately chooses to continue in his role, others presume that he is incapable and inefficient. He becomes a subject for gossip, rumors, mockery and even humiliation, in short, a laughing stock.

Co-workers or insecure bosses may try to discourage or mislead him, so that they have somebody in their midst to exploit to make up for their own inadequacies.

Added to this is the mindset and culture of the corporate world. Lack of a consistent growth record raises many doubts about the competence and even background of a candidate and hence will affect his future growth. So, the desire and endeavors for growth in the processional front has become obligatory at the workplace.

The grown of an individual is linked to the growth of the people he is connected with and in turn the growth of the organization.

However, with determination and proper plan of action and execution, any man can grow to a position he desires by beginning at wherever he is. It is only his doubts about his capabilities and lack of knowledge on how to meet his goals that limit his success.

Therefore, one of the first steps in getting out of this quagmire is to improve one’s communication skills.

A good communicator is one who can express him/herself clearly right across the organizational structure.

The key to effective communication is flexibility. One should be able to identify an opportunity to communicate. More importantly, deal with different situations and personalities accordingly.

If one thinks that hard work and talent speak for themselves, one needs to get his/her thoughts updated. Perhaps it is true in the context of the academic work, but the corporate arena requires a certain amount of persuasion to move ahead.

Merely being intelligent, hardworking, and loyal is a thing of the past. Now one has to make a conscious attempt to push him / herself into the limelight. Don’t assume one’s superiors will recognize his/her interests, capabilities and achievement. If one wants something, ask for it! It is important to put his/her feelings into words.

Don’t be modest about your achievements. Live up to that of which you are capable. However, do not overplay your cards. Self promotion should not change your personality or principles. Neither do you have to resort to unethical promotion techniques. Emphasizes your capabilities, communicate well.
