Olympic Lip-Synchs

BEIJING - Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008 - One little girl had the looks. The other had the voice. So in a last-minute move demanded by one of China's highest officials, the two were put together for the Olympic opening ceremony, with one lip-synching "Ode to the Motherland" over the other's singing.

The real singer, 7-year-old Yang Peiyi, with her chubby face and crooked baby teeth, wasn't good looking enough for the ceremony, its chief music director told state-owned Beijing Radio.

So the pigtailed Lin Miaoke, a veteran of television ads, mouthed the words with a pixie smile for a stadium of 91,000 and a worldwide TV audience. "I felt so beautiful in my red dress," the tiny 9-year-old told the China Daily newspaper.

Peiyi later told China Central Television that just having her voice used was an honor.

It was the latest example of the lengths the image-obsessed China is taking to create a perfect Summer Games.

In a brief phone interview with AP Television News on Tuesday night, the music director, Chen Qigang, said he spoke about the switch with Beijing Radio "to come out with the truth."

"The little girl is a magnificent singer," Chen said. "She doesn't deserve to be hidden." He said the ceremony's director, film director Zhang Yimou, knew of the change. He declined to speak further about it.

China has been eager to present a flawless Olympics face to the world, shooing thousands of migrant workers from the city and shutting down any sign of protest. The country's quest for perfection apparently includes its children.

So be it, and hence, Yang Peiyi deserves a Gold Medal at this Olympics 2008, before the Chinese fake all the Olympic medals in red, blue, and black, as they pretty well know that all colors agree in the dark.

Mediocrity Galore

Sharjah, 11 August 2008

Dear Mr. Plant and Equipment Manager,

On the morning of Thursday, 7th August, 2008, my car, Honda Civic Reg. 24629, was checked at our workshop after my complaint that it is releasing a cracking sound from the front when reverse turning the car, as if someone is trying to force open a jammed door.

Close to 1.00 pm same day, I checked with you to find out if any repair work has been done. You said that the parts have been ordered, and that since it would take time for the parts to arrive, I can take the car for the lunch break.

Nothing heard from the workshop since then, and yesterday evening I checked with you and you said the parts have still not arrived. At that time, I also told you that the car is producing a cracking sound from the rear as well.

This morning I checked with our stores if they had ordered for the parts as you mentioned to me. The storekeeper said that the parts were ordered and they arrived late in the evening of Thursday, 7th August, and it was handed over to the Workshop Supervisor. May I respectfully ask you why was my car problem not attended to when the parts were with Workshop Supervisor since Thursday, 7th August, 2008.

The Court (where laws suits are heard and judgments passed) needs to be moved by someone; the Court will not move on anything on it own. Like a mother who will feed milk to a child only when it cries.

If the car is not repaired on time, and as a result of which, something goes wrong with the car, please do not think that I will pay for the damages caused to the car. And if I meet with an accident or similar as a result of driving a defective car which was not repaired by the persons concerned despite several reports to them to repair the car, my spouse and kids will become automatically eligible to register a complaint against you with the appropriate authorities in Sharjah.

Therefore, this email is to serve as a record of the events at hand, i.e. a defective car, me, you Homia, and your buddies.

Sharjah, 13 August 2008

Dear Mr. Homia,

This morning at 8.00 a.m. I saw my car parked at my parking place. The car, Honda Civic, Sharjah Reg. 24629, was given to the workshops for repairs on Sunday, 11th Aug-08.

Thirty minutes later the security guard came to me with the car keys for the handing over ceremony. He said the car is ok. I phoned the workshop supervisor and he said that the steering pump problem remains as a replacement part is not available in the market, and ordered for it, and when the parts arrive, will look into the matter again. He also said that here is no harm in using the car, i.e. driving the car. So, I received the car key from the security, and will drive it.

In the meantime, if any further damages are caused to the car due to the defective parts already present in the car, the sole responsibility thereof shall rest with the workshop and its "runners". All other aspects, such as bodily injuries to me or to third-parties, shall be interpreted in accordance with the Law of the U.A.E.

It is a pitty that whenever I report a problem that concerns me or my official interests, the persons concerned are not taking any effective steps to resolve the reported problems, as if I do not mean anything to this company or world. So, please do not stand in my way if I went ahead with correcting the foolhardiness of some people in this world - Prathap G., Sharjah.

Comments

I have observed over the past 32 years of my life in the United Arab Emirates that people running certain divisions of companies are run of the mill sort of personas, and needless to say, they are mediocre to the core. May God betide woo to these rascals, and when they die, their memories shall die with them, and the world will be relieved of these hoodlums for ever - Prathap G., Sharjah.
